You can extend your planned stay by simply fast forwarding time to the next day - the game will ask if you want to leave or extend your stay.
When traveling to a location - stay for more days to save money on traveling expenses. Achievements can give substantial credit and EXP rewards try to do them - especially the easy ones on early levels. Read the in-game descriptions of the location and fishes - they offer information to what species you can fish and may also give you hints on when and where to catch trophies and uniques. 
Have the proper gear for the fish you want to catch. If you only plan to try out a specific location or plan to play for a long time in a day - then a 1 day or 3 day license should suffice. The days listed for licenses are for real-life days - not in-game days. Have the license(s) for the species of fish you want to catch. Be sure to save some money to go to the location you want to fish at.
